Debbie,
Go check out the nude guy in room 509 at the Days Inn Motel,
just across the Main Street Bridge by the mall. We got this guy
so drunk that he passed out. We took all his clothes off him.
It was wild! What a body and what a cock! He was passed out
cold the whole time we were there. Before we left we hid all his
things and left his room door open! He's laying nude on the bed
with everything showing. Go for it, it's totally awesome.

Oh, my God, Debbie thought. No they didn’t.

She remembers him. The nude guy. Last night he was the drunken morose guy. But she and Karen and Sue were the drunken obnoxious girls, so same-same, right? He was tall with a mop of shaggy brown hair and the saddest eyes she’d ever seen. He sat at the end of the bar alone with a shot of whiskey and a beer chaser. Karen and Sue always had more balls than she did and started chatting him up right away. Neither of them noticed his sad eyes.

Sam. He said his name was Sam.

He was polite, but it was obvious he didn’t really want company. Not that that ever deterred Karen and Sue. They bought him another round, and one for all of them, of course, giggling and carrying on like school girls. They asked him questions and told him much more than he probably wanted or needed to know about the three of them. They did shots with him and without him, bought more rounds of beer and a greasy plate of El Diablo nachos to share.

And the more they drank, the more he talked, weaving stories of the fantastic and macabre. He spoke of ghosts and demons and hell. Of a brother who was gone and hellhounds that had taken him. Of blood and pain and heartache. Karen and Sue listened but didn’t hear. They didn’t see his eyes. Debbie did. She watched him as he talked, they way his eyes lost focus, like they were seeing something else, not the bar or the booze or the cleavage he was surrounded by. He kept talking and his pain became a palpable thing. It flowed over her, freezing and choking, until she couldn’t stand it.

Stop, Sam. Stop it. Stop talking.

So she kissed him. Hard. Deep. Standing in front of him between his thighs, body pressed to his, arms wrapped around his shoulders. And when she pulled away, he looked surprised and a little dazed. He stared at her like he’d never seen her before, head tilted to the side, contemplating. And when he reached for her, Karen and Sue stepped in, grinning and purring and petting. They got him up off the barstool and out the door. Debbie watched them go, wrapped in Sam’s sadness.

Now she just feels angry.

My friends are stupid bitches sometimes.

She leaves aspirin and a glass of water on the nightstand, smoothes the hair from his forehead, closes the door and goes back to work.

I float nervously at the ceiling in the autopsy suite worried that the forensic dude will think I’m fat.

2. What is your most guilty pleasure?

3. Favorite childhood cartoon?

Scooby Doo, hands down.

4. What goes on your hotdog?

I, too, live in the windy city (like lemmypie) and follow the dog laws as stated: relish that is nuclear waste green, celery salt, mustard and a pickle. And onions.

5. What was the last movie you saw, for pleasure, and would you recommend it?

Semi-Pro. I love Will Ferrell, so I would recommend it.

6. On balance, are you happy with your life as it is, would you change it a little or change it a lot?

On the surface, yes. Subconsciously, no. But changing that would require tearing down my very nice wall I’ve built around me for protection.

Halloween Safety Tips

With Halloween upon us, it is worthwhile to remember a few simple rules to help keep this season healthy, happy and SAFE!! Please use these helpful hints this and every year.

1. When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER check to see if it's really dead.

2. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke.

3. Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out.

4. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. However, it will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. This also applies to kids who speak with somebody else's voice.

5. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

6. If appliances start operating by themselves, do not check for short circuits; just get out.

7. Do not take ANYTHING from the dead.

8. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good reason for it. Don't stop and look around.

9. Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure you know what you're doing.

10. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are female. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the monster is merely shambling along, it's still moving fast enough to catch up with you.

11. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, kill them immediately.

12. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog (you're in trouble if you recognize this one), anywhere in Texas where chainsaws are sold, the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine.

13. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. If you think that it is strange you ran out of gas because you thought you had most of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway, and most likely be eaten.

15. If you find that your house is built upon a cemetery, now is the time to move in with the in-laws. This also applies to houses that had previous inhabitants who went mad or committed suicide or died in some horrible fashion, or had inhabitants who performed satanic practices.

16. Do not mention the names of demons around open flames, as these can flare suddenly. Be especially careful of fireplaces in this regard.

17. Do not go looking for witches in the Maryland countryside.

FINE
This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

FIVE MINUTES
If she is getting dressed, this is half an hour. Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given 5 more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

NOTHING
This is the calm before the storm. This means "something," and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with 'Nothing' usually end in "Fine"

GO AHEAD
This is a dare, not permission. Don't do it.

LOUD SIGH
This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A "Loud Sigh" means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over "Nothing"

THAT'S OKAY
This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can make to a man. "That's Okay" means that she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
